KM FURNITURE

Every piece of furniture on show at KM Furniture has been carefully selected. They feature the best in design and craftsmanship; each piece is made in Australia and boasts a timeless quality. On top of all this the furniture – from tables to sofas and everything in between – can be customised to suit a client’s needs. “The showroom is really a sample range from which customers can personalise,” says Maria Heruc.
Maria began the furniture business 36 years ago; Alex and Dianne started Kensington Sofas about 15 years ago and the two companies merged in 2008. The third generation, Daniel, has also worked in the family business for the past eight years, after studying cabinetmaking with South Australian furniture company Artica – one of the brands they stock at KM Furniture. “He has a very good understanding of the joinery and timber,” Alex says. “As I like to say, it’s easy to make a lounge chair, but to design it so it will stand the test of time is much more difficult.”
Other major Australian designers on offer include Jardan, Molmic, Artifex and Tessa. “As different manufacturers release pieces, we see it and decide whether to stock it,” Alex says. “We’re all buying and selecting the furniture ourselves; we’re very fussy about what we put on. We’re pretty attuned to how a nice piece of furniture should look, and selecting pieces that will look nice for a number of years.”
Their showroom on Kensington Road is a heritage-listed building which began life as a butcher shop – but now is the perfect setting for displaying furniture destined for real homes. “People like to see a house full of furniture, rather than an ordinary shop,” says Maria. There are 11 rooms to wander through, plus a character-filled cellar, and you are guaranteed to be served by a member of the family.
“We provide a very personalised service,” Dianne says. “We can help you with every room of the house – bedroom through to lounge, dining, hallways, and office. We can turn a normal table top into an extended table top to suit a space, or match coverings to a room.” To ensure that a customised piece of furniture fits in perfectly, Dianne can even visit clients at home to complete a professional colour consultation.
Alex says the business aims to provide pieces of furniture that are a showpiece for a home not just today, but into the future. “This is quality manufacturing to last the distance, not something you throw away after a couple years.”
